Destination Bakersfield!.....
Why Bakersfield? There are so many places in this world where I could go for a short
little trip that has to be so much better than
Bakersfield. So why the hell am I going
there???
What is in Bakersfield you ask!??
Well before I begin my ramblings on the hot spot, let's take a look at the trip down shall we?  We left
at 7:00 in the morning where it was a brisk 55 F.  I love Bay Area weather.  I figured after a long trip
to Michigan, this trip would be a PIECE of CAKE.  The average drive is about 5 hours, but you know
me and road side attractions!  In Fresno there is a place called Forestiere Gardens.  We get there 3
hours after we left the Bay... see map.  We took the 99 South through the Central Valley.

I am going to add some
historical references to
Forestiere,
a link, and some
photos, but before I do please
read the warning label posted all
over the place (website, gardens
etc)...

It has always been our policy to
permit visitors to take photos
for their
private enjoyment.  All
rights to photos taken on the
site remain with the Forestiere
Underground Gardens.

Therefore, I am stating now that
this is a road trip journal only
intended to be shared with
friends and therefore does not
constitute commercial usage.
Perhaps this page will interest
others (my friends) to stop in
and see this place and help
preserve it for future
generations.  Please continue to

So, the story goes, this Sicilian immigrant came
to America to start a citrus business.  That is
what his family had done while in Sicily.  His
name was Baldassar Forestiere.  He came to NY
where he decided it was too darn cold.  He
moved west and ended up in Fresno where he
bought 80 acres of land he thought he could
grow on.  Bad land.  So he had to work for
someone else.  In the mean time, he built a house
and roasted in it until deciding to build a cellar to
stay cool.  Well, one room became two, and then
pretty soon there was an entire house
underground where temps were greatly reduced.
He built sky lights to get light and air flow and soon discovered that he could grow herbs.  So he tried his hand at trees.
Next thing you know there are all kinds of citrus growing underground where the soil was good, temperatures just right,
and light just perfect.  Amazing place, worth the stop!

Next, we stopped at In N Out Burger where I pondered the scripture references on the cups and hamburger wraps.

Revelations 3:20 and John 3:16.  Any good Christian will know John 3:16, but I had to look up the other one (does this
make me a bad Christian?).  I got to the hotel around 2:00 and checked out the free Giddeon Bible in the drawer.  See,
I never thought I'd need one of those! (P.S. I am and ecclectic menagerie of religions at heart, I must have lived many
a life)

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine
with him, and he with Me." (Revelation 3:20)
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

We rolled into Bakersfield around 2:00.  I checked into the Crystal Palace Inn and Suites on Buck Owens
BLVD. Nice place, clean, balcony, olympic sized pool... and since it was 104 we decided to go chill out in
the pool for a while.  I called my friend Jen, (whom was the reason I came to visit. YAY!) and arranged to
get to her house after everyone had a chance to cool down and relax.  The boys love swimming and we
never get to a pool, so traveling is always their opportunity to get in the water!
Here is the view from our
room.  Beautiful view at 7:00
am the next morning.  It was
already in the 80s.
We ran over to Jen's place at 4:00 where
Sam was sleeping with the blankie I made
for him last time I visited.
Awwwwwwwwww it made me feel
good! Ashley was taking her nap but
woke shortly after I got there.  She is
sooo cute!
We decided to go to BJ's, a brewery and grill, for dinner. Sam loves the smiley face fries!
It was really a good place. I had parmasean chicken and
mashed potatoes.  The boys had deep dish pizzas.
Teenagers! Yummy... BJ's a brew house so they had a great
list of beers as well.
I had two of these during dinner. VERY nice
stout.  Although I probably should have not had a
second; too much beer in one night.  Not that it
was giving me a buzz as much as the heaviness of
it.
Off to bed at 10:00 and tomorrow... CALM.
